Atlas Shrugged, Poor Book to Film Adaptations.

Atlas Shrugged: Part One, USA 2011

The problem with this movie was that it is being produced 40 years late. No one remembers the novel the film is based on, and frankly, Ayn Rand was a long winded old bat that took 1200+ pages to tell a 400 page story. As a supporter of free market economics, I think that everyone should read this book and probably see the movie too. But be prepared for film that didn't have the budget it needed. It was obviously made on the cheap, and critics didn't respond well to it. I think the leftist agenda of the Hollywood establishment probably had something to do with this film not getting made for over twenty years, but in retrospect they didn't have much to worry about.

The story is set in a dystopian version of America where the government begins to regulate the markets so that profitable businesses aren't allowed to prosper in the hope that less successful businesses will have a fair chance. Successful business leaders begin disappearing from public life and abandoning their empires. Their hope is to stop the motor of the world in hopes that people will appreciate the importance of the free use of the mind and of free market capitalism. Its a better story than I am making it sound, but that gets lost in the muddled and confusing presentation.  It can be difficult to adapt a book of this size and complexity into a film, but it is impossible to do well if you don't have the necessary budget.

I would encourage you to rent the dvd from netflix or redbox. Its something you should see, but not for entertainment reasons.  Sorry for the homework assignment.
