Layer Cake, Matthew Vaughn, Daniel Craig pre Bond

Layer Cake, UK 2004

Layer Cake was the first film directed by Matthew Vaughn. He went on to direct Stardust, Kick-Ass (more on that movie in another post), and X-Men First Class. He is probably best known for his work as a producer of the early films of Guy Richie. He produced both Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch. Layer Cake was his first attempt at directing a British crime drama and he did a superb job. You can feel the Guy Richie influence in the movie, but it also has a style all its own. Its the story of a low level cocaine dealer who believes that he is a few drug deals away from being able to retire from his life of crime. He chooses to live a life under the radar and avoiding the livin' large attitude associated with the drug trade. But he is drawn further into the underworld at the request of more powerful men. Danial Craig plays the main character and did a great job. There is a scene where his character jokingly holds up a pistol in a very James Bond-like pose. I have to assume that this film and that scene had a lot to do with him being chosen as the next Bond less than a year later.
